“I’m Sorry To Disappoint You, Mom.”

This week on I’m From Driftwood, we’re sharing stories we collected from a PFLAG (Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians And Gays) group in Omaha, Nebraska.

Mary, like most moms, was wondering where her son was going at night and what he was up to. After inquiring, she got her answer.

I said, “Brian, I know you go down to these bars, and…where are you going with your life?” He said, “You have a right to wonder what’s going on.” And he never said that night that he was gay, he said, “I’m so sorry to disappoint you, Mom.” And that just is forever seared in my mind.

After struggling with her son’s sexuality at first, Mary educated herself about the LGBTQ community. Her focus soon was on her son and her son’s partner, their relationship, and then gloats about her son’s marriage and wedding.

I am so grateful that Brian is now part of this other family that is so open and accepting and they have a blast.

Hopefully, your son and his love will be able to be married soon. My ballot went in marked YES on R-74.

    Hi Sandi,
I just noticed your comment and thought I would respond. Thank you so much for your support of R-74……because of you and countless others who supported the measure it did indeed pass:) My son Brian and his husband Andy can now get officially married and are planning on doing so in the near future.

Like most gays and lesbians, I knew from an early age that I liked boys. I remember playing house with my siblings and our friends and I would volunteer to be a wife (as we always had more boys than girls) and have a husband. Usually it was one of my brother's best friends and the [...]

I collect words. Always your words. I still don't know how I feel about you, but I collect every little thing I can. It's as if I'm afraid that the second I stop, you'll fade away. You already are, and, if I lost you, I'd be far beyond devastated (I suppose that's [...]

I used to pride myself on telling the truth. My brother was the one who told lies, and got into trouble at school, etc. I was honest and I never got into trouble. Not that I suddenly had a switch and turned into this lying, troublesome teenager, but let me tell you, [...]

My mother moved around a lot. She had little need for companionship beyond her two brothers Steve and Wayne. Wanda Jewell was an adamant girl with dark hair and a penchant for playing cowgirl; an early feminist who always knew what she wanted. In the 4th grade she knew she would grow up to have twins. [...]
