“How Long Does It Take For Dreams To Come True?”

This week on I’m From Driftwood, we’re sharing stories we collected from a PFLAG (Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians And Gays) group in Omaha, Nebraska.

Joni and her spouse had three boys–or so they thought.

My spouse and I had three kiddos and we thought we had three boys until our middle child started talking about having a girl heart, brain, and soul. She was about 4 and a half when she first said it.

Joni was accepting of her transgender daughter but struggled with not knowing how to comfort her.

I felt as a parent very helpless to make that better and that’s what we’re supposed to do as parents is make it better. And that’s oftentimes how she would explain it, she would say, “Every night when I go to bed I pray to God that when I wake up my outside will match my inside, and it doesn’t happen. How long does it take for dreams to come true?”

Continue Reading to watch Joni’s story.

I’m From Clovis, CA.
So, I had this friend. Let’s call him Herb. Herb, like almost everyone else I know, is a devout Christian. At the time, I didn’t know Herb very well. He went to church every Sunday and we hung out together occasionally within our small pool of friends. In 2006, I graduated high [...]
I’m From Corte Madera, CA.
I was lucky. I grew up 10 minutes north of San Francisco, and went to school at the ultra-liberal (and pretty awesome) UC Santa Cruz. While I went through the internal struggles of dealing with my sexuality as most do, my coming out process was relatively painless. I was active in college and became a Resident Advisor. [...]
I’m From Massachusetts
I am an 18-year-old gay teenager. Combine that with the fact that I have severe ADD and acne, and am a uncoordinated nerd, and you have a typical high school outcast. The funny thing, though, is that I've only accepted that I am gay for a year. It should have been obvious; for example, the first [...]
I’m From Spring, TX.
I was in Sadr City looking for something to cover up the body of a fallen Soldier.  He had died in a bombing and I could see his blood staining the ground below the stretcher he lay on. As I searched, my mind brought me back to a few weeks prior when my patrol had come under [...]
